Entrepreneurial Lessons: Carolyn Newman, Hair Colour and Education Consultant

Carolyn Newman loves the technical aspect of hair colouring but she also loves educating young hairdressers about the science and art of applying hair colour, so after 25 years in the salon business, working for Charles Worthington and L’Oréal Professionnel, she decided to unite her expertise to create her own colour and education consultancy. Here she talks about why having a flexible schedule pushed on her decision to go solo and how to position yourself as a brand, being self-critical in a positive way.

Project M: What motivated you to launch your own business?
Carolyn Newman:
After working for a fantastic company for 25 years and having a very varied career in all areas of the hairdressing business, I wanted to concentrate on my colour expert and educator knowledge and pass this onto all hairdressers around the globe.

I also wanted to have more freedom to work between London and my home country Australia so I could see my family more. I feel as you get older these things become more important. I have obtained a lot of inspiration from other hair icons and experiences that I want to inspire and support the next generation of hairdressers with the communication and craft skills they will need to succeed in their career.

Project M: What are the biggest challenges you have faced so far?
Carolyn Newman:
Taking a step back and really thinking about who is your brand, what is your brand and what is your key message. There is so much noise out in the world of business re social media, the internet etc, you can sometimes get swept away by what other brands are doing, and not focus on your own. To Do lists have always been part of my life, but are more important than ever now to keep me disciplined day to day.

Project M: What advice would you share with those thinking about creating a business?
Carolyn Newman: Be realistic and self-critical in a positive way. What is your USP and what are your core business values. I wrote a business statement in my first month, when I was working out what my company would be and it always reminds me of who I am and what I want to offer and if I start straying off track, I look at it and if reminds of my direction.
