Brands We Love

Brands We Love: Philosophy

The name Philosophy has always been highly suggestive and since I tried the first product (my beloved lip balm Kiss Me) I understood why the brand’s founder, Cristina Carlino, chose the name. The goal was to be a hybrid between over the counter cosmetics and dermatological solutions, making ‘backed by science’ formulas accessible to a broader range of consumers.

Philosophy was launched at Barneys New York, in 1996, and more than 20 years later, products like Hope in a Jar, Microdelivery Peel and Purity are still industry darlings. Plus, the super fragrant 3 in 1 shampoo/shower gel/bubble bath, with flavours like Coconut Frosting, Melon Daiquiri, Raspberry Sorbet and Vanilla Birthday Cake has been extensively copied.

Back to skincare, the cheeky names and simple packaging evidence the values of wellbeing and effectiveness, so ubiquitous nowadays, but still ground breaking: Hope in a Jar, Miracle Worker, Full of Promise, Time in a Bottle and Take a Deep Breath are a few examples.

Along the cosmetic range, the Grace and Love fragrances (Amazing, Pure and Living Grace; Falling in Love, Loveswept and Unconditional Love) are also hits from the brand, which in the UK can be found online and at selected Boots and John Lewis. If you ever tried one product, it’s hard to not come back for more, right?
