If you are over 30, Lancôme was probably one of the first prestige beauty brands you have tried, right? Maybe because of its Frenchness and the easily recognizable gold rose logo or maybe because the brand made you feel like an adult somehow… My first product was Hydra Controle Mat, a moisturiser for oily skin, no longer available (we are talking about the 1990s…). Another darling was a moisturiser body spray that smelled so great, but I can’t remember the name, followed by the AromaCalm range and, of course, Juicy Tubes lip gloss, Hypnôse mascara and Bi-Facil makeup remover.
Fragrances also play an essential role. Ô Oui was my partner throughout my senior year in college and when I saw a diaphanous Daria Werbowy on Hypnôse ad, I couldn’t resist (but since it was too strong for the hot Brazilian weather, I could only wear it at night, so when Hypnôse Senses arrived, I was hooked). My mother loved Miracle, which is forever linked in my mind with Uma Thurman because of the campaign. Speaking of celebrities associated with a brand, Lancôme is a kind of a benchmark in this department: Julia Roberts, Kate Winslet, Penélope Cruz, Emma Watson, Anne Hathaway, Inès Sastre, Juliette Binoche, Lizzie Jagger, Julia Restoin Roitfeld, Isabella Rossellini (twice) and her daughter, Elettra Wiedemann, Lily Collins and the list goes on…
Since 1964, the company is part of L’Oréal and as I said earlier, a French icon, keeping the purpose of its founder Armand Petitjean, who created the brand in 1935 with Tendre Nuit, Bocages, Conquete, Kypre and Tropiques fragrances. The name Lancôme was inspired by a castle near Paris, the Château de Lancosme. Many decades later and there are plenty of cult fragrances (Trésor among them), innovative skincare, like Génefique and Visionnaire and makeup products to make us feel like a Parisiénne. In the last couple of years, this latter category was a little dusty but with the hiring of Lisa Eldridge the offer has increased and diversified, so the desirability factor is coming back!
