Anyone who knows a little bit about makeup is aware that M.A.C is one of the best brands in the world. Buying the first product in one of its stores is like a ‘coming of age’ process! I still remember when I bought my first lipstick in a San Diego mall. After choosing my colour, I went out feeling like a makeup authority!
The Canadian company established in Toronto by Frank Toskan and Frank Angelo, in 1984, had the goal to be a supplier for makeup artists (hence the name, Makeup Artist Cosmetics). But, it didn’t take long for models, editors and photographers fall in love with the cosmetics and to consumers find about the assortment of colours and quality of products that became classics like Russian Red and Morange lipsticks, Spice lip liner and Studiofix foundation.
Over the years, the company developed sustainable and social campaigns, from recyclable containers to the enduring Viva Glam that redirects all income to the M.A.C AIDS Fund. Ru Paul, Lady Gaga, Pamela Anderson, KD Lang, Mary J.Blige, Elton John, Boy George, Dita Von Teese, Ricky Martin, Nicki Minaj and Cyndi Lauper are some of the names that lent their faces to this important initiative.
These partnerships ended up inspiring others, with iconic pop culture characters like Barbie, Hello Kitty, Wonder Women, Disney villains, Miss Piggy, Marge Simpson etc., besides real life personalities (Carine Roitfeld, Daphne Guinness, Iris Apfel, Beth Ditto…) and designers (Alexander McQueen, Dsquared2, Gareth Pugh, Proenza Schouler…)
Since 1998, the brand belongs to Estée Lauder Companies and is now available in over 80 countries. Nevertheless, the slogan “M.A.C is for all ages, all races, all sexes” still translates perfectly the feeling of coming into its stores and being able to create a unique look!
