Retinoids are part of my life since I was a teenager as I visited the dermatologist for the first time searching for acne treatments. Along came the habit of wearing sunscreen every day to avoid dark spots (recent studies show no relation between retinoid and skin pigmentation with sun exposure, nevertheless, sun protection is a must). Years went by, I tried many other products but never left it behind. I truly believe that few ingredients are so efficient to unclog pores, prevent and lighten spots, enhance collagen production, smooth out wrinkles, improve and renew skin texture. It’s simply too many benefits in one product!

Anyway, there are some cautions to take. Avoid using it in red prone areas like around the nose as it may increase the appearance of broken capillaries. Keep an eye on the amount to be applied as well: a pea-size is enough and more than that can irritate the skin. If yours is sensitive, use it sparingly, maybe over a moisturizer.

Today, most dermatologists ally retinoid with other products, following the patient’s needs, which lowers the risk of side effects. Usually I apply it 2 or 3 times a week, alternating with serums, vitamin C or hyaluronic acid, for example.

It’s important to note that only a dermatologist can prescribe retinoic acid or tretinoin as he/she will evaluate the most suitable concentration to your skin. My current one is Vitacid 0.1% cream, that my mother brings from Brazil every time she visits. If you can’t go to a dermatologist regularly, don’t worry! Over the counter formulas, known as retinol, are also very good. The only difference is that results may take longer to appear since they have lighter concentrations, but in the long run you’ll get the same effects.
