Bringing women together and make them an active part of the conversation. That’s how the idea of Women of Power UK (WOP) came to founder Priscilla. On the online platform The ConveHERsation, contributors talk about love, relationships, career, feminism and lifestyle, and the discussion continues on the podcast and at regular events to promote honest conversations about women’s roles and how we can free ourselves from stereotypes. In this interview she talks about the importance of living and breathing your business, how to not rush into building things at once and why it’s essential to have a grasp of how things operate.
Project M: What motivated you to launch the brand?
Priscilla: There was so many contributing factors that led up to me deciding that I needed to take a step to bringing women together. The key thing is I wanted the platform to be different, I don’t really like the elitist structure that I had seen at other empowerment based events. I wanted women to not just come and be dictated to but to feel like an active part of the conversation. I wanted women to leave our space and have formed connections with people, I wanted our events to help ignite a fire in them to pursue their dreams and to not feel alone.
I have experienced a few things in my own personal life that made me really look at the positions women hold in society. Things like societal expectations, culture and specifically assigned gender roles somehow contributed to this warped view people have about women & ultimately the views women have of themselves.
I believe empowerment is about enlightenment and then choice. It’s important to let people know they can be who they want to be and they shouldn’t be limited by limiting stereotypes.
Project M: What are the biggest challenges you have faced so far?
Priscilla: You never feel like you’re doing enough! Sometimes I have plans to cover this and cover that but we can’t do it all at once. I want to ensure different women are drawn to our platform but I have learned you just have to take things one step at a time.
Sustainable manpower – we run with the help of tons of volunteers from events assistants to videographers to facilitators! It can be hard to form a team and have a steady consistent group of people, we all have bills to pay! But to be honest regardless of that we are ever so grateful for all the amazing humans that contribute their time to helping us, it speaks so well of them to give us their time and skills!
Project M: What advice would you share with those thinking about creating a business?
Priscilla: Understand your aim and live and breathe it. It is one thing to have a great idea but it is a whole other to act on it. You slowly find out that business isn’t all fun and games, and you have to be aware of some of the boring less fun operational stuff.
Secondly I would say try to understand every single part of your business. You may not be good at it, it may not be your designated area of operations but as a founder or owner it’s so essential for you to have a grasp of how things operate. It gives you a deeper understanding of the how’s and the whys but also it allows your team/staff to see you active in all areas. I always say it is paramount to lead from the front. Demonstration rules!
