Entrepreneurial Lessons: NINI Organics

NINI Organics wants to be superfood for your skin. As the name says, the brand founded by siblings Alex and Nicole offers 100% natural and organic ingredients in a range of skincare, bath and makeup products (the Glow Illuminator is like sunshine in a bottle!) that prove that natural beauty can also be fun and glamorous. In this interview, Alex talks about how his skin issues motivated the brand creation, how to avoid startup mistakes and the importance of celebrating every milestone along the way. Enjoy!

Project M: What motivated you to launch the brand?
Alex: I started to dream of owning my own skincare range when I suffered from severe acne aged 16, it was the lowest point in my life as I also loved to perform. Acting was my absolute passion but I never landed any auditions due to my acne. I was also a gymnast and a lover of all my mum’s products, so with those 3 major things in my life I had the idea set in my mind that I would become a famous actor and release a perfume! And then do all my own stunts for the perfume ads! So when acne hit me, you can imagine that dream disappeared, I literally thought I couldn’t come back from this and I was stuck with skin as bad as mine forever! I went through all the doctors’ treatments until the last resort was taking Roaccutane. In hindsight, I wish I never took it and kept searching for an alternative, but hey you live and you learn right? So when I came off of Roaccutane my skin was left in a state, I started to discover the clean beauty world and the rest is history. From there I worked for 9 or so years in the clean beauty industry all the while studying and researching ingredients to develop my very own 100% clean organic vegan range. That’s basically how NINI Organics was born, me and my sister joined forces and created the most epic, festive and 100% genuine beauty brand 🙂 We are both super proud of our achievements so far and can’t wait to see what the future holds for us 🙂

Project M: What are the biggest challenges you have faced so far?
Alex: Our biggest challenges so far has definitely been dealing with everything starting up a company comes with, especially launching a skincare line, I had no idea what was involved with the legal side to it. I have to say that it’s been an amazing learning curve. Also getting your brand into the customers’ hands has been a fun, exhausting and rewarding challenge at times. Me and Nicole have both froze our socks off whilst standing at markets, got soaked whilst walking to events and nearly lost half our stock in freak weather! But we pushed through and came out the other side smiling and laughing knowing that it will make a great story sometime.

Project M: What advice would you share with those thinking about creating a business? 
Alex: I’d definitely say be you, never change your values to please others and have fun! This is what you want to wake up in the morning and do so treat it like it’s your favourite food, song or film! Love every minute and don’t forget to share the success and share others’ success in the same field as you! Look at this as a celebration not a competition. Stay humble and enjoy your passion/dreams come to life. Also, if you ever want to do any exhibitions or big events like trade or consumer please go and check them out first, don’t do what me and Nicole done and book loads before even checking them out! Once again we have learnt a lot in the short time we have been around.
